Since scoring two goals in the last 17 minutes to drive past Bluefield College (VA) for a dramatic comeback on September 23, the Concord Men’s Soccer team has seen its offense get stuck in neutral.
The Mountain Lions went scoreless for the third consecutive game, falling 5-0 at Shepherd Saturday afternoon, October 3.
“We missed a penalty kick when the match was still scoreless,” Head Coach Steve Barrett said, “and missed on another good opportunity. We were also down to 13 healthy players, which made things difficult.”
Much like last Wednesday’s home loss to West Virginia Wesleyan, the Mountain Lions fell victim to short but damaging missteps on defense.
“We did well for the first 35 minutes,” said Barrett. “But allowing three goals in a 6-7 minute stretch did us in.”
Saturday’s loss to the Rams drops Concord’s record to 4-7, 1-5 in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and puts a dent in CU’s hopes of reaching the conference tournament.
The Mountain Lions return to the pitch to host Carson Newman in a non-conference match on Tuesday, October 6. Kickoff is at 4:00 pm EDT.
Concord’s next WVIAC match will be Alderson-Broaddus, next Saturday, October 10, at 2:00 pm.
