Playing its second match in 48 hours, the Concord Men’s Soccer team dropped its 2009 season finale, 5-1, Friday afternoon in a non-conference match against Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, VA.

“In the first half, we were good. We played well,” said head coach Steve Barrett. Indeed, Concord would score the first goal of the match, on a free kick by Scotty Funston. It was Funston’s third goal of the season.

CU would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

But early in the second half the Mountain Lions lost midfielder Ivan Deyanov and stalwart defender Adam Whiteside each to multiple yellow cards. Forced to play just nine men, Concord couldn’t suppress SVU’s attack and the Knights would pull away to the victory.

2009 was just the second season for Concord’s revived Men’s Soccer program. The Mountain Lions lose just two seniors from this year’s squad: Ryan Grimmett, who scored a goal in Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Virginia Intermont, and Joey Parks, who missed the season with a knee injury.

Friday’s loss ended Concord’s two-match winning streak. The Mountain Lions finish the 2009 season at 6-11-1, 2-7-1 in the WVIAC.
