The Concord Volleyball team concluded its whirlwind trip to the Northern Panhandle with a three-sets-to-one loss at West Liberty State on Saturday, October 31.
The Mountain Lions took the first set, but the host Hilltoppers took narrow victories in the second and third sets before closing out the match in set four (22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18).
Concord's Emily Wilson topped the charts with 17 kills. Tori Fornadel added 12 kills while hitting a robust .300, while Amber Miller added 12 of her own.
Libero Kelly Newberry anchored the CU backline with 18 digs. Helen Thiesen set up the Concord attack with 43 assists, to go with 12 digs.
Today's match came less than 24 hours after CU dropped a three-set match at Wheeling Jesuit Friday night. Concord's record now stands at 11-19, 3-9 in the WVIAC. The Mountain Lions have lost three consecutive matches and are 1-7 on the road against conference opponents.
Tracy Lee led West Liberty with 16 kills; Katie Helms had 47 assists. April Salyer topped four players in double digits in digs with 22.
Concord coach
Kate Southcott noted the Mountain Lions committed 11 service errors and 16 return errors, and the miscues made a difference.
“We win set one 25-22, then we lose the second set by the same score,” said Southcott. “We lost that second set, a close set, with seven service errors. We made too many mistakes.”
The Mountain Lions close out the 2009 regular season with a pair of home matches next weekend. Concord hosts Pitt-Johnstown next Friday night, November 6, at 7:00 pm.
CU welcomes Shepherd to the Carter Center on Saturday, November 7, at 11:00 am.
