Concord University’s Department of Athletics has announced that Women’s Tennis player Emily Fletcher is the winner of the Bob Brown Leadership Scholarship for the 2009-2010 school year.
Emily is a junior from Vansant, Virginia, majoring in secondary education.
This yearly scholarship is given to the returning player who has done the most toward contributing to the success of the team, on and off the court.
“Emily is a two year player on our squad and I find it difficult of thinking of women’s tennis with out her being here,” Concord head coach Joe Blankenship. “She’s involved in many things here at Concord, and didn’t feel she would have time to play her first year, but she has made up for it the last two. Her personality, leadership and that sparkling smile makes her a joy to have around.
“The only flaw with Emily is that she expects too much from herself sometimes,” Blankenship continued. “She can’t do everything, but don’t tell her that. She would probably take it as a challenge and prove you wrong.”
The women’s tennis scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Bob Brown, a former Coach and Speech instructor at Concord who passed away in the spring of 2009. Brown was a nationally-ranked tennis player who remained a friend of the Mountain Lions program even after his retirement and gave free lessons in and around the Athens area for more than 20 years.
