Both the Concord Women's and Men's Cross Country teams finished in third place in the Virginia Tech Relays on September 4 in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The freshman duo of Chelsea Callaway (Beaver, WV/Shady Spring HS) and Rachel Williams (Ona, WV/Cabell Midland HS) scored Concord's best overall finish of the event, coming in 5th in the women's competition. Callway and Williams combined to cover the 10-mile relay course in 38:25.0
Junior Carly Stout (Alderson, WV/Greenbrier East HS) and sophomore Tabitha Whited (Grundy, VA/Grundy HS) finished 12th with a time of 39:30.4.
Freshmen Shawnee Carnett (Sugar Grove, VA/Marion HS) and Micalyn Miller (St. Mary's, WV/St. Mary's HS) came in 20th at 43:24.5
Freshmen Sara Hunting (Chesapeake, VA) and Catherine Chase (Charleston, WV/Capital HS) finished 25th at 50:00.7, just ahead of junior Brittany Gill (Beckley, WV/Woodrow Wilson HS) and Diane Rumrill (Concord NH), who came in 26th at 50:07.7. Freshman Alex Cook (Charleston, WV/Capital HS) and Holly Overmiller (Shady Spring, WV/Shady Spring HS) were 27th at 59:01.5.
Virginia Tech's Lindsey King and Jessica Trapeni won the women's event at 37:22.0
Team scores at the Virginia Tech Relays are taken from the top three finishes from each school. The host Hokies won the team title with 10 points, with Liberty University second with 23. Concord's 37 points was good for third, with Virginia Commonwealth fourth at 43.
On the men's side, Concord was paced by junior John Meadows (McArthur, WV/Independence HS) and freshman Craig Pritt (Terra Alta, WV/Preston HS), who finished 9th with a time of 46:50.6 on the 12-mile relay course.
Sophomore Robby Peters (Greenbrier West HS) and freshman Sterling Snyder (Kingwood, WV/Preston HS) finished 15th at 47:56.0.
Sophomore Nick Lucento (Shady Spring, WV/Shady Spring HS) and freshman Nathan Rees (Ravenswood, WV/Ravenswood HS) were the third of Concord's top three duos, finishing 17th in 48:06.2.
Freshmen Benji Hamer (Charleston, WV/Capital HS) and Brad Dugan (Lewisburg, WV/Greenbrier East HS) were 21st at 49:45.3. Another freshman duo, Brad Ferguson (Cleveland OH/Buckeye HS) and Wes McKinney (Masontown, WV/Preston HS), were 24th in a time of 52:21.0. Junior Jonathan Yost (Athens, WV/PikeView HS) and freshman Jordan Odell (South Charleston, WV/George Washington HS), along with senior Lance McDaniel (Pulaski, VA/Pulaski HS) and freshman Szymon Rola (Poland/Fork Union Academy) also competed in the event.
Virginia Tech's duo of Jason Cusack and Chris Walizer finished first with a time of 45:05.
Virginia Tech swept the top three spots to win the team title with the minimum 10 points. Liberty University was second with 24. Concord's 41 team points gave the Mountain Lions third place, while Radford was fourth with 70.
Both the Concord women and men will return to Blacksburg for their next competition -- the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday, September 18.
