FLAG DAY

CU TAKES PENALTY-FILLED WIN AT SETON HILL

Some football historians credit Youngstown State University football coach Dwight Beede for coming up with the idea for a penalty flag, and that such a flag was first used in YSU's game against Oklahoma City University on October 17, 1941.

Six days past the 69th anniversary of that historic game, Beede's brainstorm took center stage in Concord's game at Seton Hill.

The Mountain Lions were penalized 19 times for 162 yards, and the host Griffins 12 times for 130 yards, in Concord's 28-17 victory at Offutt Field in Greensburg, PA.

The victory raised Concord's record to 6-2, 4-2 in the WVIAC, clinched a second consecutive winning season and moved CU into 2nd place in the conference behind unbeaten and nationally-ranked Shepherd.

In the 2nd half, facing a stern SHU defense, Concord generated 115 yards of offense on 31 plays. Meanwhile, CU was penalized 11 times for 97 yards. The Griffins gained 228 yards on 41 plays, but were set back 80 yards on seven infractions.

Concord scored touchdowns on its first two possessions. Zack Grossi connected with Rashid Baker for a 15-yard TD pass with 11:35 to go in the 1st quarter; after the Griffins got a field goal on their first drive, Grossi found Brian Kennedy for an 11-yard TD pass with 1:37 left.

Reigning WVIAC Special Teams Player of the Week Brandon Strupp booted a 39-yard field goal into a strong breeze late in the 2nd quarter, and Concord led 18-3 at halftime.

Strupp added a 40-yard field goal on the first play of the 4th quarter to extend the lead to 21-3. CU then stopped Seton Hill on downs on its own 40; one play later, Grossi lobbed a touchdown strike to Thomas Mayo (left)to put the Mountain Lions ahead 28-3 with 12:47 remaining.

The Griffins got a touchdown on their next drive to pull within 28-10, and added another with 5:56 left to close to 28-17.

Concord went on a perfectly time-consuming nine-play, 28-yard, 5:10 drive that ended with Strupp missing a 31-yard field goal into the wind. But it left the Griffins just 46 seconds, and four plays later the Mountain Lions forced and recovered a fumbled by Seton Hill QB D.J. Lenehan to secure the road victory.

Grossi was 17-29 for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Mayo finished with six receptions for 141 yards and a TD.

Aaron Martinez led the Concord defense with ten tackles and two interceptions. Riyahd Richardson and Nate Pollard added nine tackles each. Jimmy Keating finished with eight stops.
