UPJ CLAIMS OT WIN IN CU'S SEASON OPENER

Stout defense and clutch free throw shooting got the Concord Women's Basketball team into overtime, but the Lady Lions dropped a 68-66 final at Pitt-Johnstown in their season opener Saturday afternoon.

Down by two points with just over a minute to go, CU forced the host Lady Cats into three turnovers and got two free throws from Sidney Lindsey to tie the game at 60-60 and send it into the extra session.

The lead changed hands four times before Jolysa Brown put Concord ahead 66-65 with :35 remaining. But Sheena Aden scored on a three-point play with :21 left to put UPJ over the top.

Brown recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in overtime. Camisha Alexander led Concord with 19 points. Freshman Andrea Bertrand added 11 points and Lindsey 10.

Aden led Pitt-Johnstown with 26 points, on 11-16 shooting. Andrea Dalton added 22.

Saturday's matchup had some earmarks of a season's first game. Concord shot just .348 (23-66) while UPJ finished at .419 (26-62). CU committed 25 turnovers and Pitt-Johnstown 30.

Up next for the Lady Lions is their home opener against Bluefield College (VA) on Monday, November 15, at the Carter Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
