Old Man Winter keeps taking his toll.
The nasty weather that’s plagued West Virginia in January and February has also plagued Concord’s basketball schedule. A series of postponements has precipitated (for lack of a better word) a pileup of games in the final two weeks of the regular season.
On Thursday night, the re-worked schedule had the CU Women’s Basketball team playing its fifth game in seven days – and, a meeting with first-place West Virginia Wesleyan on the Lady Bobcats’ home floor.
Wesleyan, fresher off two well-timed days off, raced out to an early double-digit lead and defeated the Lady Lions 84-55 at the Rockefeller Center.
Getting 12 first-half points Lydia Bridenbaugh, and another 10 from key reserve Jamie Kauffman, the Lady Bobcats opened up a 42-25 lead at the break. WVWC would lead by as many as 31 points in the second half.
Camisha Alexander led Concord with 17 points. Jolysa Brown added 15.
The Lady Bobcats, keeping their starters in for most of the second half, were paced by 18 points each from Bridenbaugh and Kauffman. Danae Hill added 12 points, Brianna Welch 11 and Angela Tassari 10.
The loss was Concord’s third straight, dropping their record to 12-11, 9-9 in the WVIAC. WVWC claimed its seventh victory in its last eight games to improve to 15-8, 13-5.
The Lady Lions get a precious day off before returning to play on Saturday. Concord will host West Virginia State at 4:00 pm EST at the Carter Center, part of a doubleheader with the men’s team.
Both games will be broadcast on Classic Rock 102 The River (102.3 FM WMTD) and webcast at www.theriver102.com, starting at 3:30 pm.
