Six-Run 1st Inning Rally Proves Decisive

Another early rally and another strong starting pitching performance propelled Concord's Baseball team to a 14-5 victory over California (PA) on Wednesday, at the Savannah Invitational in Savannah, GA.

On Tuesday, the Mountain Lions scored three runs in the top of the 1st, and Chastin Akers threw a complete-game five-hitter, in a 5-1 win over West Liberty.

Wednesday, Concord (3-1) erupted for six runs in the top of the 1st, and All-American Donovan Huffer worked seven strong innings, as the Mountain Lions dropped the Vulcans for the second time in three days.

CU bested Cal 13-11 on Monday, March 8th.

Wednesday's win was Concord's third in a row.

Concord chased Cal starter Mark Zalena early. The redshirt freshman allowed two hits and issued four walks and was lifted before recording an out. August Kerr relieved him, allowing 10 hits and three runs in six innings, but the damage was done.

Huffer scattered nine hits in his first pitching start of the season. Staked to an 8-0 lead, Huffer wavered only in the bottom of the 3rd, allowing three runs (two earned). But he kept the Vulcans off the scoreboard for the rest of his stint. The senior struck out nine and didn't issue a walk.

Huffer, batting second in the Concord lineup, supported his own cause by going 2-5, with a double and three runs scored. He's hitting .579 (11-19) through CU's first four games.
