CARNETT QUALIFIES FOR NATIONALS

CONCORD FRESHMAN SECURES SPOT IN 800 METERS

Shawnee Carnett's first season as a college athlete is going so well, it will keep on going.

The Concord freshman has qualified for the NCAA Division II Track & Field Outdoor National Championships.

Carnett will compete in the 800 meters, an event in which she set a CU record time of 2:12.26 at the Duke Twilight meet in Durham, NC on May 9th.

The freshman from Sugar Grove, VA will be seeded 15th out of 19 runners at the National meet, which will be held May 27th-29th in Charlotte, NC.

“The main goal right away is to get into the final,” Concord head coach Mike Cox said. “Once you do that, you have a chance, and Shawnee has a chance to do very well.”

Carnett is the reigning West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Rookie Athlete of the Year. She earned four WVIAC Athlete of the Week awards during the 2010 indoor and outdoor seasons.
