In the landscape of college golf, a team sometimes needs only to finish near the top to come out on top.

Concord Men’s Golf team took an eight-stroke lead into Wednesday’s third and final round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Region Tournament at the Cobb Course at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, WV.  Thus, the Mountain Lions didn’t need to post the day’s best score secure the tournament championship.

But they almost did.

Concord’s 299 team score was a strong second in round three, and, more importantly, it allowed the Mountain Lions to cruise to the regional championship and secure a spot in the NCAA National Championships later this month.

Concord finished the regional at 893, 11 shots better than top-seeded Indiana University (PA). St. Thomas Aquinas (NY) posted Wednesday’s lowest score at 294 to secure third place. CU’s WVIAC rival, Ohio Valley, was fourth. Clarion University (PA) edged American International University (MA) by one stroke for fifth place, and the final spot in the national tournament.

Concord’s Ryan Terdik (left) narrowly missed winning the event’s Medalist award. The junior fired a one under par 71, one of just two sub-par rounds on the day, to finish one shot back of IUP’s Gavin Smith.

CU’s Emmanuel Charmat carded a 77 Wednesday to finish 5th in the individual standings.

Concord’s Kyle Long shot a 75, and Johan Isberg a 76, to wind up in a group of five players tied for 14th. Jimmy Ettore ended the three-day event at 257.
