Christian Mullins' hopes of playing for a state high school championship in West Virginia didn't come to pass this year.

But neither have her days as a softball player.

The all-state catcher from Wyoming East High School has signed a letter of intent to play for Concord, starting in 2010-2011.

“Christian will bring a strong work ethic and great attitude to the team. She has remarkable potential on the field,” said CU head coach Sabrina McCullough.  “Not only are we glad to have her here on the softball field, I'm convinced she will be a great ambassador for Concord in the classroom as well.”

In her senior season at Wyoming East, Mullins hit .583 with two home runs, three triples, 14 doubles and 37 runs batted in. She helped lift the Warriors to a top-ten ranking in West Virginia and earned a spot on the Class AA All-State team.

“She a workaholic,” WEHS head coach “Doc” Warner told John Conley of the Pineville Independent Herald.  “As the years went by she got better and better because she works the right way. She's smart and coachable – she'll buy into what (McCullough) is saying and do it.”

The versatile Mullins was a left fielder as a high school freshman, then being shifted to second base and shortstop for two seasons before moving behind the plate as a senior. McCullough will likely utilize Mullins as a second baseman at CU.
“That's where I'm comfortable,” Mullins told Conley. “(It's) where I've played the last few years.”

Mullins also felt comfortable with Concord, deciding to join the Lady Lions after her first visit to campus. “The campus is close to home,” she told the Independent Herald, “and I really liked the team. Everyone seems to get along with each other.”
