STELLAR SECOND ROUNDS LEADS CONCORD TO SEASON-OPENING WIN

Riding a dominant second round and getting top-five performances from a veteran and a newcomer, the Concord Women's Golf team posted a ten-stroke victory in the Fairmont State Fall Classic, which ended Monday, September 13.

It was CU's first event of the 2010 Fall season.

The Lady Lions totaled 324 in Monday's second round at the nine-hole, 3073-yard Fairmont Field Club.  The score was 12 shots better than the next best team; Wheeling Jesuit shot a 336 and wound up finishing third.
Following a 330 in the first round on Sunday, Concord's two-day total of 654 was 10 strokes ahead of runner-up West Liberty.
Concord trailed WLU by six strokes back after round one, but the Lady Toppers fell out of contention with a 340 on Monday.

Senior Nicole Shaw and freshman Marina Erice – playing her first collegiate event – each topped CU with a 157 to tie for third in the individual standings.
Shaw recovered from a bumpy first round to fire a 74 on Monday, the team's best round of the day.

Vivian Garciaferro came in at 163, in sixth place.

Shelby Myers was 12th and Heather McMillen 22nd.

West Liberty's Emily Taylor won Medalist honors at 148 (73-75).

"The first tournament of the year is always tough, trying to get back into it,” said CU assistant coach Darcy Donaldson Monday evening. “We came to this tournament with the mindset that we were the team to beat, we accomplished our goal and got the win.”

“We struggled as a team starting out the first round,” said Donaldson. “(Monday) we got off to a much better start. The girls played better today and were rewarded.”
