LADY LIONS SCORE 24 RUNS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

The Concord Softball team broke into the win column in a big way Sunday, banging out 28 hits in sweeping a non-conference doubleheader at Shaw University (NC).

The Lady Lions downed the Lady Bears 12-4 and 12-9 at the Walnut Street Complex in Raleigh, NC, getting their first two victories of the season and splitting their four-game weekend road trip.

The Lady Lions would score in every inning of the first game.

CU flexed their muscles in the top of the 1st.  Gleason walked, Ord and Williams reached on infield singles, and Bowling crushed a grand slam home run. Concord led 4-0.

Shaw responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, featuring back-to-back solo homers from Montgomery and Monica Grimmage.

CU scored single runs in each of the next five innings.

In the 2nd, Ord reached on a one-out fielders choice, stole second and third, and scored on a wild pitch.

In the 3rd, the Lady Lions tallied on singles from Smith, Kaylyn Klatt and Tiffany Kobordo.

In the 4th, Ord again got things going, this time with a leadoff walk. She stole second, moved to third on a bunt by Williams, and scored on Bowling's grounder.

In the 5th, Mariel Wilson led off with a single, moved to second on an error, advanced to third on Smith's groundball, and scored on another Lady Bear error.

In the 6th, Ord walked, and scored on Bowling's RBI double.

The Lady Lions turned the game into a rout with a three-run rally in the 7th. Nikki Carinelli walked and Korbodo singled. One out later, Ord reached on an infield single to load the bases.
Williams followed with a two-run single, and Bowling capped the rally with an RBI groundout.

Bowling powered the CU attack by going 3-5 with six RBIs, with a grand slam and a two-run double.
Ord reached base in all five of her plate appearances and scored five runs.
Williams finished 2-4 with two RBIs, with Smith and Klatt added two hits apiece.

In the second game, Shaw jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, scoring twice each in the 1st and 2nd innings.

The Lady Lions got on the board on Katelyn Williams' solo home run in the top of the 3rd, then erupted for five runs in the 4th. Ericka Davies led off, was hit by a pitch, and scored on Rachel Mack's triple. Tamara Smith doubled to drive in Mack.

Shaw pitcher Kashia Hemphill hit Becca Gleason with a pitch, then walked Brooke Bowling to load the bases. That brought up Williams, who cleared the bases with a double that put CU ahead 6-4.

Shaw answered with a four-run rally in the bottom of the 4th, capped by Emily Montgomery's three-run homer, to reclaim the lead at 8-6.

Concord came back in the 6th. Gleason walked to lead off the inning, and Casey Ord launched a two-run homer to tie the game at 8-8.

One out later, Bowling and Emily Gallagher hit back-to-back doubles to give CU the lead for good. Ericka Davies followed with an RBI single to stretch the advantage to 10-8.

The Lady Lions added two insurance runs in the 7th. Stephanie Harper led off with a single, and pinch runner Mariel Wilson moved to second on a passed ball. Ord reached on an infield single; she advanced to second on a wayward throw, with Wilson winding up on third.
Wilson and Ord would each score on a passed ball, padding the CU lead to 12-8.

Shaw pushed across a run in the bottom of the 7th to close out the scoring.

Ord paced CU with four hits. Williams went 2-4 with four RBIs, while Smith and Rachael Mack had two hits each.

Up next for the Lady Lions is visit to Johnson C. Smith University for another non-conference road doubleheader on Sunday, February 27.  First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm in Charlotte, NC.
