DANIELS, W.Va. – Freshman
Natalia Jornet won the Mountain East Conference Championship Wednesday afternoon on Glade Spring's Cobb Course after shooting a 76 in the final round to win the individual conference crown by five shots.
As a team, the Mountain Lions finished sixth overall. Freshman
Katelyn Sanders finished in a tie for 26
th with a three-day total of 289. Freshman
Sarah Cole was 28
th (292) while fellow freshman
Kaitlyn Chapman placed 31
st (321) and junior
Annie Johnson finished 40
th (379).
After day one of the tournament, Jornet was two shots behind Charleston's Lauren Crouse, but moved into a tie for first heading into the final round. Jornet tied for the lowest score of the second round by firing an 80.
The Tarragona, Spain native along with Crouse was five shots clear of Notre Dame's Brianna Stokes heading into Wednesday's concluding round.
Jornet proceeded to tie for the lowest round of the tournament by putting together a round of 76 while Crouse could not keep pace on the final day, shooting an 86. Stokes could not draw any closer to Jornet either as NDC's top golfer carded her own 76.
Jornet has now won both MEC golf events this year. In September, she won the MEC Fall Classic at Edgewood Country Club in Charleston, West Virginia.
While Wednesday's championship medalist is not assured of winning MEC Golfer of the Year, she is the leader for the award.
League golfer of the year and all-conference is based on the best rounds throughout the three MEC events during the year, the fall classic, the MEC Championship and the spring classic.
