Former Concord and Bluefield State standout Zach Powell just wrapped up his first season as CU's pitching coach in 2026.
Powell, an All-MEC selection at Concord in 2025, is in charge of the Concord pitching staff and calling pitches in game.
Under Powell's guidance, the Mountain Lion pitchers finished the 2026 season with 339 strikeouts which is third most in program history. The strikeout parade was led by Kaden Varela-Payne who set the Concord single-season record with 106 strikeouts. Varela-Payne was named an all-region selection as well as All-MEC First Team for his work on the mound.
As a player, Powell played his final season at Concord, after a successful run at Bluefield State. where he won 21 games in three seasons. Overall, Powell won 28 collegiate starts while amassing over 200 career strikeouts.
